Maui CoCoNut Porter

CoCoNut Porter
Maui Brewing Co
Lahaina, Ha
5.70% ABV

C. Clear
H. Super Dark Red Almost Brown
N. Coffee Coconut and Slight Chocolate Hints

EvilTwin; I was super excited to try this one. After watching Zane Lamprey on 3 Sheets drink this one in Hawaii I was on a mission to get a hold of this, one way or another. That being said I have to give a big thanks to Brian for bringing this one all the way back from Kona, you rock man. The color/appearance of this one was extremely dark, but didn’t carry a large thickness to it. The aroma was pretty big and robust with hints of dark chocolate, coconut, and coffee bean. I could have smelled this one all day, it was that good. It had a very light body and wasn’t terribly too sweet. One that I could see myself drinking every day, if I could drink every day (it’s all about quality control my friends). Score 4.5

The Ferm; Well like EvilTwin I have been excited about this beer since I saw the episode from Three Sheets! BTW, not sure if you saw or not but Three Sheets got picked up by the Travel Channel about a week ago, well they picked up seasons 1-4 as a trial run before they send Zane and the crew out for Season 5 (hopefully). Well to celebrate and try to get the crew out on the road quicker Maui Brewing Company and Zane have decided to buy the Travel Channel some beer. Check out the ZaneLamprey.com to buy the Travel Channel a beer or a case. We saved Three Sheets again!
Ok, well we know I love beer from a can, as long as it is good beer from a can. This beer had a super light body that was smooth and pleasant to drink. The coconut really shines in this Porter. Its really amazing how the delicate flavors shine through but still dont over power the beer. The coconut plays well with the hints of dark chocolate and light coffee that is in this beer. THIS IS WORTH FINDING AND DRINKING ALL SUMMER IF POSSIBLE! Great Beer!

Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree IIPA

Double Crooked Tree Imperial IPA
Dark Horse Brewing Co.
Marshall, Mi
13.6% ABV

C. Clear
H. Dark Amber, Copper almost in color
N. Caramel, Toffee Malts, Slight Alcohol Burn

EvilTwin; Again I didn’t know what to expect from this one because I’ve never tried anything from Dark Horse but any bottle that comes with melted wax on the cap gives off the impression that there is something to behold within. With this being a Double IPA I figured the aroma’s/ABV/flavors were all going to be big and bold, which they were. With my first initial whiff I got a big alcohol burn swiftly followed by roasted malts and hops. The flavors where earthy and a little piney. It was a little more on the sweet side, but it had a very smooth taste with a nice bitter finish on the back end. The kind that hits you right on the lower back part of the jaw. With the ABV clocking in at 13.6% I can’t myself drinking more then one of these. I would rather prefer to spread the love around and share it. Score 4.1

The Ferm; I love me some double IPA’a and I also being able to try new beers that I have never had anything from them before. Well the Double Crooked Tree is the best thing I could ask for!
This one looked BIG (intensity wise) from the initial pour. There is a huge alcohol burn which is present from the first wiff to the last sip. This is a very good example on how to have a solid and flavorful malt background and not over hop the hell out of the beer. Very solid beer, and I cant wait to try the standard IPA and compare notes.

Pretty Things Babayaga

Babayaga
Pretty Things Beer and Ale Project
Cambridge, Ma.
7.00% ABV

C. Not Sure, This is a Dark Beer
H. Black-ness
N. Very light nose, hints of chocolate and dark fruit

EvilTwin; I didn’t know what to expect from this beer since I’ve never had anything else from them, but I’m always excited to try something totally random or rare. The label reminded me of something I might have drawn when I was just a wee lad way back in pre-school. The first initial pour looked very dark, like most stouts that I’ve seen in the past, with virtually no foam at all. I was able to pick up a few things from the aroma of it, roasted malts and barley, subtle hints of coffee, but I really thought it was just too bland and I couldn’t get much more then that. It might have been too old or just a bad bottle, who knows. At 7% ABV it was pretty easy to drink and it left a bitter after taste in my mouth. I would love to try it again just for the sake of giving it a second chance. Score 3.0

The Ferm; Well this is my 3rd or 4th Pretty Things Beer, and so far they all seem to be very well made and a little unique flavor wise. I was very interested in trying their take on a stout.
The beer poured super dark, and I think clear but I could not tell since it was pitch black. Nothing really stood out in the nose of the beer that really drove me crazy to try it. The first sip was pretty cool and was lacking flavor, so I allowed it to warm up a bit. Still after warming it up the flavors were subtle and boring. There was a nice chocolate backing to it, but it fell off the palate fast! Overall a good beer but nothing I will go out and hunt again for, unlike a lot of the other Pretty Things Beers!

EvilTwin Arrives

Well I spoke a bit about our guest this week in previous reviews and warned that you porbally will be running into more of him. Well this week you get 5 whole days of EvilTwin Reviews! Please welcome EvilTwin to the blog!

Hey everyone out there in beer cyberspace world, my name is Casey, but I guess my alias for the site with be EvilTwin, because I have a twin brother and appear to be the evil one. I first got into beer about 4 years ago when I was living in Orlando, going to school and working at Whole Foods Market. Whole Foods had a pretty intense selection of beer and I remember one day seeing this bottle that said it had maple syrup brewed into it. Turns out it was Tommyknocker maple nut brown and I decided to pick up a 6 pack and give it a shot. I was completely blown away by the flavors that I got from it, I had no idea that beer could have so much to offer. I didn’t really begin getting “serious” about beer until about a year and a half ago when I was able to attend the Brewtopia beer tasting in Boca. Seeing everyone there really excited about beer got me really inspired to try as many different beers as I could. When I’m not tasting beers I’m teaching guitar or writing/jamming on songs with my buddy Brian, you can check out some of our stuff at www.dailyentries.com. Well that about sums it all up. Hope to meet everyone that might stumble across this and share a drink with you. Cheerz

Monday’s Suck!

Well I know it is Saturday and all, but i figured I would start a post on my thoughts on Monday’s.  Particularly this Monday in the treasure coast of Florida.  Man, they really suck!

That’s right Borat.  Monday’s usually do suck, but not this Monday in Port Saint Lucie.

Why?

Well this Monday at Vine and Barley in Port Saint Lucie, the crew will be holding an EPIC Brooklyn Kegging.  The kegs include the newest Brewmaster’s Reserve Buzz Bomb, Black Chocolate Stout (aged delicately for 8 mths!), Summer Ale, and Lager. While the Lager and Summer Ale will be on tap all day for only $2.95; the special beers will be tapped at 6PM SHARP! Some drawings will be had for a chance to win a bottle of Brooklyner Schneider Hopfen-Weisse.

So in other words…I think you should stop by and check it out.
