Maui CoCoNut Porter

CoCoNut Porter
Maui Brewing Co
Lahaina, Ha
5.70% ABV

C. Clear
H. Super Dark Red Almost Brown
N. Coffee Coconut and Slight Chocolate Hints

EvilTwin; I was super excited to try this one. After watching Zane Lamprey on 3 Sheets drink this one in Hawaii I was on a mission to get a hold of this, one way or another. That being said I have to give a big thanks to Brian for bringing this one all the way back from Kona, you rock man. The color/appearance of this one was extremely dark, but didn’t carry a large thickness to it. The aroma was pretty big and robust with hints of dark chocolate, coconut, and coffee bean. I could have smelled this one all day, it was that good. It had a very light body and wasn’t terribly too sweet. One that I could see myself drinking every day, if I could drink every day (it’s all about quality control my friends). Score 4.5

The Ferm; Well like EvilTwin I have been excited about this beer since I saw the episode from Three Sheets! BTW, not sure if you saw or not but Three Sheets got picked up by the Travel Channel about a week ago, well they picked up seasons 1-4 as a trial run before they send Zane and the crew out for Season 5 (hopefully). Well to celebrate and try to get the crew out on the road quicker Maui Brewing Company and Zane have decided to buy the Travel Channel some beer. Check out the ZaneLamprey.com to buy the Travel Channel a beer or a case. We saved Three Sheets again!
Ok, well we know I love beer from a can, as long as it is good beer from a can. This beer had a super light body that was smooth and pleasant to drink. The coconut really shines in this Porter. Its really amazing how the delicate flavors shine through but still dont over power the beer. The coconut plays well with the hints of dark chocolate and light coffee that is in this beer. THIS IS WORTH FINDING AND DRINKING ALL SUMMER IF POSSIBLE! Great Beer!

Kona Pipeline Porter

Pipeline Porter
Kona Brewing Co.
Kona, Ha.
5.40%

C: Appears Clear
H: Dark Ruby/Brown
N: Coffee and a Little More Coffee

KirkDiggler;
A: Coffee takes center stage in aromatics w/ lingering roasted malts in the background. No hop/esther aromatics.

A: Pours Dark brown w/ a minimal white/tan head that quickly dissipated.

F: Coffee and roasted malts, no hop/other flavors. Coffee overpowers everything as far as taste goes.

M: Minimal in body, low carb, no creaminess, astringent from the coffee.

O: While this beer is brewed to style, there are a few minor flaws that could be addressed: Aroma is overpowered with coffee: I would have liked more of the malt character to shine through. The coffee is good, but I believe that balance is important. Flavor is also overbalanced with the coffee, almost to the point where I believe I’m drinking a cup of coffee and not a beer. M: I believe that with an increase in malt character/presence that the body will greatly improve.
(29/50) / (2.9)

The Ferm; Thanks to a new beer bud for bringing this over, I have a feeling you the readers will be seeing some of this guy around sometime soon. For now I will just call him Evil Twin.
Clear stated that this is the Coffee Version of the Kona Porter, which is brewed in limited quantities, according to the bottle. I have rarely found a bottle to lie, while the description from the brewery might be a little over the top they are usually on point with the basics. This bottle didn’t lie.
Coffee was up front and personal with this beer from the get go. Coffee was strong in the nose, strong on the attack, and sat down to chill on you palate. I did get some roasted malt qualities in the body of the beer but they were quickly over powered by the coffee. Usually when a beer is so heavy on coffee the body would be pretty thick, this was not. The body was light and thin, making for an easy drinking coffee beer. The fact that this beer was so refreshing, makes it a great solution for the Imperial Stout Lover, looking for a lighter beer, during the summer months.

Alaskan Smoked Porter

Alaskan Smoked Porter – 2008
Alaskan Brewing Co.
Juneau, Alaska
6.50% ABV

C: Pitch black but appears to be clear
H: Black with dark brown on the outer edges
N: Smoke with bacon, campfire smells

La Cocinera;I was excited to try this beer because I really like smokiness. And the aroma did not disappoint– it smelled deliciously smokey and bacony. The flavor, however, was a bit more subtle. It was a good tasting and balanced beer, but I just would have preferred a bit more smoke and a richer flavor. For example, I think I preferred Left Hand Smoke Jumper because the smoke in the flavor was a lot more intense. And I’m sure I could experiment with some interesting recipes with this one. Hmm.. I wonder what smoked ice cream would taste like.. Well, I think I said the word smoke like 1600 times in this review so I’m done.
P.S. More smoke please!!
Score: 3.987

The Cerveza Chica: I was not thrilled about trying this beer because it consists of many of the things and characteristics that I hate about a beer, but I figured it was okay to end our review session with it since it was the darkest and heaviest beer. The smell is a lot of smoke and it reminds me of a campfire, but when you taste it I get more bacon taste than smoke. It was fairly light for a dark beer. I guess for a porter it is fairly session-able although I could and would never drink more than a few ounces of this beer. I was not blown away by this beer but also not utterly disgusted either.
