Three Floyds – Gumballhead
Three Floyds Brewing
Munster, IN
4.80% ABV
C. Hazy
H. Straw yellow
N. Citrus Hops strong almost like an IPA
Miguel; This was my first Three Floyds brew aside from Dark Lord and had no clue what to expect. I never even read on what style it was. The nose was big on citrus hops so I thought it was an IPA but then I read the trippy, tye dye metallic like label and saw it was a wheat. Odd. But the taste was quite yeasty and sweet malts. A bit of a citrus like hop bitterness pops up at the end like it’s say “Don’t forget I’m here.” Oh I didn’t. And the hoppiness lingers around for a bit afterward. Take the advice of the bottle “It’s Not Normal.” It sure isn’t for a wheat beer.

Ferm; YESS finally Three Floyds Gumballhead! This beer so many people have told me about for such a long time. “Dude this is the best beer” “Man you have to try this beer”. Honestly it was good, not great. For a beer it sort-a threw a curve ball. The nose was strong Hops like an IPA, and then you take a sip of this and realize that it is a wheat beer. Sweet notes take over then the hops come back for a nice visit at the end. Good beer, and as the bottle says “its not normal.” Worth a try if you can land a bottle, GREAT SUMMER BEER!

Thanks for the review.
With spring weather approaching, I’ve been in the mood for a good Hefeweizen. I picked up Widmer’s this weekend, although I foolishly didn’t get on Beer Advocate to see it’s C+ rating. ‘Twas not a good example of the style.
As I was drinking it, though, I started to wonder if there were any Hefeweizens that featured an IPA-like hop bill. It seems to make perfect sense, since these beers are expected to have plenty of citrus notes.
I don’t know if we get Three Floyds out here in NC, but if I see it you can bet I’ll pick it up.

Daniel,
Thanks for the read, I agree and IPA and Hef are a great combo for the summer. Sadly 3F only distributes to about 3 states up north. Mainly Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin?!? Check the site out or you can always hit up BeerAdvocate.com and jump in the trade forums.
This was a truly unique beer that I could not compare it to anything else that I have ever tried (up to 631 beers total right now). You can also check some of the online retailers and buy a 6 pack they run about 10 bucks but shipping is a PAIN!
[...] Don’t forget that I reviewed this at Dos Beerigos as well on their scale and it can be read here. [...]
Greatings, Nombre de dosbeerigos.com a GoogleReader!
Gracias
